Theme From Symphony no. 9,The New World, Largo

Price: $1.00

Antonín Dvorak (1841 - 1904) composed this symphony in 1893 during his visit to USA. The symphony has 4 movements, where Largo is the second. It has been told that the main melody of this movement is inspired by Henry Longfellow’s (1807 - 1882) poem, «The Song of Hiawatha» from 1855. The poem tells about the great waterfall Minnehaha (The laughing water) near by Minneapolis. Once a year the Indian chief Hiawatha had to sacrifice a young girl to the spirits in the waterfall. To make him stop this horrible custom, his wife Minnehaha jumps into the waterfall and dies. Since then, in remembrance of her, they called the waterfall Minnehaha. Here, in this largo you will meet Minnehaha. With tears in her eyes she says goodbye to her husband before she jumps into the waterfall. In his sketches, Dvorak simply called this movement “Legend”. Here you find Dvorak’s famous theme arranged for 4 guitars. Score and parts 9 pages.
