The Trav'ler Benighted

Price: $1.00

Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791), the popular patriot, lawyer, Congressman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, poet, artist, composer and distinguished civil servant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1737. He almost certainly was the designer of the first Stars and Stripes, and on June 14 (Flag Day) in 1992, the United States Postal Service honored him as the "Father of the Stars and Stripes" with a commemorative pictorial postmark showing his portrait and the flag. Francis Hopkinson died in 1791, the same year as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) passed away. In the 17th and 18th centuries, most music heard in the United States was of European origin, principally English or French. The earliest American songs and hymns, were also written to English tunes. Francis Hopkinson was the first native-born American to compose a song, My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free. In 1788, Francis Hopkinson published eight songs that he dedicated to George Washington. The titles of the songs, as well as their poetic and musical content, show the influence of the contemporary English style. Among these songs we find The Trav'ler Benighted. Here it is arranged for 4 guitars. Score and parts 8 pages.
